Angela Begin: Rose Up

Rose Up is about a bubble bursting. The sobering realization that something that kept you safe and held you is slipping away, changing or was never what you thought it was. I wrote this song while visiting my dad in Northern Alberta at the end of a summer where I was losing an important person to me. My dad was driving me around the countryside where I grew up, and I kept falling asleep over and over again in the car like a little kid and waking up to the wide open, mystical skies of the prairies. I was reflecting on my childhood and reflecting on how we all have different tools in our toolboxes to handle conflict resolution, and at some point the words "Rose up out of a dream, passenger side / I could feel it was time to leave / It was never real...ly mine" popped into my head.
This song is about reconciliation and ecosystem destruction. The uprooting of the woods you loved as a kid or the metaphoric levelling of the rich ecosystem of conversations, plans, dreams, shared languages, co-created worlds, and love that made up a relationship. Feeling like you're the only person who believes in the value of a sanctuary, but having to accept and forgive other people for deciding to destroy it instead.
Angela will be performing at Lamphouse in Montreal with her band on November 6th, and solo on November 8th.
