Sault Ste Marie-based singer/songwriter Brian Tremblay is releasing his new album, In the Tracks of the Black Bear. The album is a love letter to the Algoma Central Railway and will be released on January 31, 2025.

“My father worked for the ACR,” said Tremblay. “As well as my uncle and some cousins. We have trains in our blood.” His father, Ted, returned from WWII and began working for them. Tremblay’s siblings were born in railroad towns like Hawk Junction and Chapleau. “I’m sure it was a culture shock to my mother coming from Belgium after the war and getting off the train in Northern Ontario,” remarked Tremblay.

The album and song are recorded simply with acoustic guitar, harmonica, and vocals, which is how Tremblay presents his shows. His wife, Lynn, sings backup and percussion. “This is my second album highlighting Sault Ste Marie and Northern Ontario. Like my previous album, this is a very personal project to also honour my family.”

In October 2025, Tremblay and another Northern Ontario-born musician, Will Gillespie, will tour their historic-themed albums throughout Northern Ontario and perform at historic sites and museums. Gillespie’s album, Mine! True Legends of the Porcupine Gold Rush, is the perfect companion for performing with Tremblay, as both albums are very personal and tell stories from the regions they come from.
