Brooklyn Doran: Sleeping Dogs
Queer Ontario singer-songwriter Brooklyn Doran (she/her) has released her new EP, "Sleeping Dogs", through her DIY label, Merch Girl Records.
What started as a writing experiment with collaborator Jaye Schwarzer (Cancer Bats, Julie & the Wrong Guys) slowly became "Sleeping Dogs", a collection that stretches Doran’s folk roots into something heavier, dreamier, and a little messier around the edges.
Produced by Mike Tompa, the EP brings together indie folk, alternative rock, grunge, and punk while keeping Doran’s storytelling at the centre. The project was built over several years with a group of collaborators, including Colanthony Humphrey of The OBGMs, who recorded drums at Universal Music Canada’s 80A Studios, Cinzia & The Eclipse, Dan Hosh (Wild Rivers, The Glorious Sons), Jackson Landry (Cancer Bats, Diner Drugs) and more.
Doran describes Sleeping Dogs as “dreamy and grimey,” a phrase that captures the balance at the heart of the record. Soft vocals and vulnerable writing sit beside distorted guitars and heavier arrangements, reflecting both her singer songwriter roots and the punk and hardcore spaces she has spent years touring through.
