As the threat of trade tariffs may take effect within the next 24 hours, Folk Canada is closely monitoring the potential impact on our sector. These tariffs apply to goods rather than services, however, we understand the concerns that economic shifts can bring to artists, presenters, and industry professionals, and we want to assure our membership and community that we are actively working alongside our partners to advocate for Canada’s independent folk music sector.
At this time, live performance fees and recording costs should not be directly affected, and we do not anticipate major changes to O and P visa processes beyond the existing costs and wait times.
With the potential economic impact of these tariffs on Canada’s economy, we urge our festival, presenter, label, DJ, and company members to consider increasing their investments in Canadian artists. Artists are amongst the most precariously employed workers in our country, and rely on performance and industry opportunities to sustain their careers. Supporting them through bookings, broadcasting, and development initiatives is more crucial than ever.
Folk Canada remains dedicated to ensuring that our sector thrives. We encourage you to share your concerns with us and let us know how these tariffs may impact your company, events, artistic practice, or career. Please reach out by clicking here.
