This is the story of the migration of the Blues out of the deep south, north up the Highway 61 corridor to Chicago and beyond. A story in music. A story about music. A story of musicians. The Delta Blues was born on the flood plains of the Mississippi, played on porches, on street corners or in local ramshackle juke joints. And there was that ‘sound’ — it was raw and uncomplicated. That’s the Delta Blues. And that’s what came north to Chicago, and landed in the loud and raucous South Side bars, where the Delta Blues became electrified. And it was recorded the way it was played live—loud and intense, and contrary to conventional recording wisdom, amps ran hot, loud and distorted, just like on stage. The music came from the Delta, but in Chicago it was loud enough for the world to hear.
