Award-winning singer-songwriter Jessica Spurrell has just announced her sophomore EP, The Gentle Hand, which will release March 6th, 2026. The record features three songs, including singles Sandcastles and The Gentle Hand, as well as a brand new track: Mona.
The Gentle Hand (EP) displays a distinct blend of through-composed arrangements and singer-songwriter elements. Inspired by composer/songwriters like Judee Sill, Joanna Newsom, and Toronto’s own Minjia Chen, The Gentle Hand weaves vibraphone, foley, and various stringed instruments throughout carefully crafted lyrics. Each track explores a different theme related to identity and womanhood, united by an emphasis on textured production. Jessica says this about her approach:
“With The Gentle Hand (EP), I aimed to explore layering and texture, particularly with respect to recorded vocals. I experimented with vocal doubles, guitar-amp vocals, Leslie cabinet vocals, whispers, humming, and bold vocal processing techniques. I also explored texture through the use of foley, hand percussion, and instrument doubling.”
Drawing from Newfoundland folk roots and contemporary jazz influences, Jessica Spurrell is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter. She is inspired by music that layers intricate arrangements with thoughtful lyrics. Jessica loves to perform live, solo or with-band, sharing stories and laughs from the stage. She recently made her out-of-province live debut, and hopes to connect with more Canadian audiences in 2026.
