Kate Weekes: Exploits Island

ree

Exploits Island is a musical response to the fabric art installation ‘The Bridge’ created by Newfoundland artist, Alli Johnston. This instrumental tune composed by Kate Weekes acknowledges the multiple layers of human history on Exploits Island, expressing complexity through three interweaving melodies. The piece is at times beautiful, melancholy, sparse, chaotic. Sometimes we hear a single, linear melody. At other times there are parallel narratives that must make space for each other or otherwise collide. Weekes is featured on clawhammer banjo alongside Brian Sanderson on piano.

Alli Johnston generously shared her visual work, mailing the silks from Newfoundland to Ontario. They are featured in the music video filmed by Stephen Fuller at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa. This mutually inspiring project continues to evolve.
