The Hagstrom-Schmidt Affair, releasing May 1, is the third album by Ottawa-based Millennial/Boomer folk duo, Libby & Cal. Their instruments, a Hagstrom 12-string guitar and an Oscar Schmidt autoharp, provided inspiration for the title. The cover, which mimics a classic romance novel, was photographed by the internationally acclaimed artist Curtis Perry.

Over 12 songs, heavy themes such as aging, gender roles, and mental health are punctuated by light-hearted banter songs. Greg Kelly, host of Tunes After Noon, calls them, “funny and sad and deep and shallow... and great!”
Libby & Cal’s vocal harmonies and 48 strings are joined on some songs by James Clugston on drums, Rob Snasdell-Taylor on bass, and Glenna Hunter on cello. The album was recorded and produced by James Stephens, who has worked with many artists, notably Lynn Miles, Ian Tamblyn, and Kate Weekes.
