Results of the Special Meeting of the Members of FMO

Updated: Sep 26

To the Members of Folk Music Ontario,

We are pleased to announce that on September 20th at 2:34 PM Eastern Time, the membership of Folk Music Ontario through the meeting attendees and members voting by proxy, unanimously voted in favour of the special resolution to change the name of our organization from Folk Music Ontario to Folk Canada. This pivotal vote marks the beginning of a new chapter as we expand from a provincial body to a national one.

The special resolution, approved by the membership, outlines the following key changes:

  • The name of the organization will be officially changed to Folk Canada.

  • All membership categories, including Artist, Organization, and Festivals, are now available for eligible applicants residing anywhere in Canada.

The Objects of the Organization that previously referred to "Ontario" will now refer to "Canada" or "Canadian," reflecting our shift to a federal body. The new Objects are as follows:

  • To support the growth and development of folk music in Canada by fostering the growth and development of presenters and performers;

  • To act for the benefit of Canadian presenters and performers engaged in creative and performing arts that originate from folk cultures and traditions;

  • To facilitate and support the exchange of ideas, information, education, resources, and expertise within the Canadian folk community;

  • To assist members of the Canadian folk community in communicating with government agencies, corporations, and other relevant bodies.

The bylaws of the organization will be updated to align with these changes, except for the following:

  • The Folk Music Ontario Conference will retain its name until such time the membership decides otherwise;

  • The Ontario Folk Music Awards will continue under their current name and purpose.

The full details of the special resolution can be viewed here: Special Resolution.

The organization is now tasked with filing the necessary letters patent to formalize the name change. In the meantime, the bylaw changes have taken immediate effect, and will be published to our website in the coming days.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the membership for their participation and commitment throughout this process. This is an important step towards unifying Folk Music Ontario and Folk Music Canada into a national organization dedicated to supporting the growth of folk music and its communities across the country.

We invite all members to join us for a special Red Carpet Reception prior to the Ontario Folk Music Awards, where we will unveil the new Folk Canada website and branding. The reception will be hosted by CBC’s q host, Tom Power, and will take place on October 6th, 2024, at 12:30 PM at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.

We look forward to continuing this journey with all of you.

Sincerely,

Rosalyn Dennett

Executive Director

Folk Canada ( previously Folk Music Ontario)
