I took a trip to California a few years ago and I noticed there were so many out of state plates. I asked about it and the answer I received was so simply stated: “all these people come to LA to pursue their dreams but most of them don't even get to stay long enough to change their plates.”
I was so fixated on that - the idea of so many people moving somewhere to try for their dreams, and then just going back home. This song is inspired from thinking about that. What is might feel like to have the triumph and excitement of going for your dreams, and then it not turning out the way you thought. The song plays with perceptions of success, defeat, and achievement in that way. It’s about the ever-changing terms of those things.
The song is piano based with breezy lo-fi / indie-inflected vocals and authentic Rhodes. It has a reflective, sepia-toned, ‘70s-inspired feeling that invites calm and nostalgia. There is intimacy - naked piano/vocals and jazz-inspired chording, and a tight, tasteful percussion section that sets a light groove in the latter half. It is a gentle song and it is special to me. It is exciting that it is the first single from the upcoming debut EP. It will be the first track I've ever released!
