"North Track Records is pleased to announce the release of NT- 48, “The Fragile Tangent”, Ian Tamblyn’s 47th recording.
Recorded at Happy Rock Studios International in Chelsea over the winter of 2026, “The Fragile Tangent” was recorded by Ross Murray and produced by Ian and Ross. The recording features eleven tracks with musicians Fred Guignion (guitars), Sue Johnson (vocals, harmonica), Pat Maher (electric bass, vocals), Ross Murray (drums), and Michael Ball (upright bass), with Anne Janelle (cello). Ian played acoustic guitar, piano, organ, harmonium and hammered dulcimer as well as vocals on the tracks. In addition to these tracks, there is a video download available with this album. Phil Victor Bova mastered the album.
Cover art was painted by Bruce Wittet. Back cover and interior by ceramicist, David McKenzie. Design by Ian and Petr Maur.
The album is dedicated to the memory of writer Brian Doyle and David McKenzie.
There are several currents running through this album, but the main one would be “the road”, both literally and symbolically, perhaps best described in two songs on the album, ‘The Writer's Road’ and the title track,’The Fragile Tangent’.
The fragile tangent could be described as the loose collection of small concert halls, churches, and community halls spread across the country, connected only by the musician's tour schedule and the great volunteer spirit that keeps such places viable. The fragile tangent is the connective tissue that threads across the country and yet has little to do with the music industry. It is kept alive mostly by the volunteers who wish to keep community-spirited music alive. Ian Tamblyn has been connected to this community for much of his musical life.
