Melanie Peterson: Float

Toronto-based, Saskatoon-born singer-songwriter Melanie Peterson releases “Float,” the second single from her forthcoming album 'Wildflower', on Friday, October 16.

Dreamy, warm and gently hypnotic, “Float” lives in the space between holding on and letting go. It’s not a song about having all the answers or arriving at some perfect state of acceptance. Instead, Peterson captures the hope that one day the things we struggle to release might loosen their hold — and we might finally be able to stop fighting the current and simply float.

Blending contemporary folk, Americana, and roots-pop with an airy, atmospheric sensibility, the song pairs that emotional uncertainty with a feeling of openness and possibility. There’s melancholy in recognizing how difficult letting go can be, but optimism, too: the belief that change is possible.

Produced by longtime collaborator Mitch Girio, “Float” follows “Gypsy Heart,” the first single from Peterson’s forthcoming album 'Wildflower'. Together, the songs begin to reveal a collection concerned with movement, change, freedom, and finding your way into and through the unknown.

The accompanying video was filmed near Peterson’s home in Toronto’s east end, on the shores of Lake Ontario — water, sky and horizon providing a natural visual counterpart to the song’s central metaphor.

Peterson is also looking forward to connecting with fellow artists and industry members at this year’s Folk Canada Conference in Hamilton, where she’ll perform Saturday night/Sunday morning at 12:10 a.m. in the “Living on the Bright Side” showcase, Room 921

And for anyone needing a little extra incentive to stay up past midnight — there will be chocolate cake.
