Indigenous singer-songwriter Raven Reid shares two deeply personal tracks, “Stumbling Fool” and “215”, both recorded last year during the inaugural CBC Reverie Indigenous Music Residency in Toronto.
“Stumbling Fool” is a moving country/folk ballad rooted in the night Reid’s adulthood began—her 18th birthday—when her adoptive mother forced her out into the freezing November cold. With nowhere to go and still in high school, she wandered the streets of Prince Albert, SK, under the Northern Lights, until a compassionate waiter at a 24-hour Husky restaurant gave her a place to stay. The song blends heartfelt storytelling with warm yet aching vocals, offering a tender, resilient portrait of survival.
“215”, is a long-form spoken-word poem inspired by the discovery of unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. The news triggered vivid memories for Raven of being taken from her family during the Sixties Scoop, leading her to create a piece that honors lost children, survivors, and ancestors, while calling for truth before reconciliation.
